The main tasks of the Archives is

  • to preserve the documentary heritage of Vestland for the benefit of present and future generations;
  • to be a source of enduring knowledge accessible to all, contributing to the cultural, social and economic advancement of the free and democratic society;
  • to serve as the continuing memory of public institutions as Vestland County Municipality and the municipalities in the region.

The County Archives in Vestland is a relatively new institution, established in 1983 by Sogn og Fjordane County Municipality. By 01.01.2020 the archive is part of Vestland County Municipality.

A substantial part of our work has been project based and focused on developing new and better infrastructure and services. We work steadfastly at digitizing historical documents and developing web archives to ease the public access to the material. The gateway to our collections and services is our webpage: www.fylkesarkivet.no

What will you find in the Archives?

The County Archives in Vestland preserve the non-current records of the historical Hordaland and Sogn og Fjordane County Municipality and the municipalities in the region. Documents from these institutions are often brought to the archives when they are out of administrative use. The official records in the archives mirror the tasks of official institutions through the centuries, and they contain applications and decisions, surveys and accounts, and other documents produced in the public administration.

The County Archives in Vestland also preserve archives and collections from the private domain, such as organizations, companies and private persons. The collections from the private domain include photos, music, place names and private records that all represent our intangible cultural heritage.
